Daily Itinerary

1Day 01: Arrive Paro International Airport

After an unforgettable flight giving you an adrenaline rush as you see views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Jomolhari and Mount Jichu Drake, you will land at Paro International Airport. The landing at Paro is considered as one of the most challenging and enthralling experience.

Our company representatives will receive you at the airport and drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan (1 hour). Enroute Tamchog Lhakhang as it is conveniently located on the highway between Paro and Thimphu. The temple is believed to have been founded by Thangtong Gyalpo, a legendary Tibetan saint and iron chain bridge builder which still stand today. Tamchog Lhakhang features traditional Bhutanese architectural style with intricate woodwork and murals depicting Buddhist teachings and legends.

On arrival you will be taken to your hotel for a check-in and short rest. In the evening, visit National Memorial Chorten, a stupa dedicated to world peace and honoring the Late Third King of Bhutan Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Join locals as they circumambulate the chorten, spinning prayer wheels along the way. Then drive to Tashichho Dzong.The impressive fortress-monastery is the seat of the Bhutanese government and also houses the throne room and offices of the King.

2Day 02: Tango Hike and Thimphu Sightseeing

The Tango Monastery hike is a popular trekking route near Thimphu, Bhutan, known for its scenic beauty and spiritual significance.

After breakfast, hike to Tango Monastery. It was founded by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa in the 13th century and built in its present form by Tenzin Rabgye, the 4th Temporal Ruler in 1688. Along the hike, you'll enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu valley and may encounter Bhutanese yaks grazing in the meadows. The tranquility of the forested surroundings adds to the spiritual experience of the hike. Once you reach Tango Monastery, you'll find a complex of temples and residential buildings where monks reside and practice Buddhism. The main temple houses ancient Buddhist relics and intricate frescoes. Visiting Tango Monastery provides insight into Bhutanese religious practices and offers opportunities to interact with monks and learn about their daily routines and spiritual pursuits.

Lunch in Simply Bhutan and know more Simply Bhutan as it offers a meaningful and immersive experience for tourists and locals alike, providing a window into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and its efforts to preserve and promote traditional values in a rapidly changing world. It’s a place where visitors can learn, interact, and appreciate the beauty and depth of Bhutanese culture firsthand. Then drive to Motithang Takin Zoo (Takin - The National Animal of Bhutan). Another chance to see Takins in a natural environment, this reserve offers a different perspective and may have more opportunities for photography.

3Day 03: Thimphu - Punakha

Driving to Punakha offers a scenic journey through Bhutan's mountainous landscapes and cultural landmarks. Enroute stop at Dochula Pass (3,100 meters), about 30 minutes' drive from Thimphu. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas on clear days. Take some time to walk around and admire the 108 chortens (stupas) and the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang temple. Continue your journey towards Punakha. On the way visit Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility. Chimi Lhakhang was built in 1499 by the Tibetan saint Drukpa Kunley. He is affectionately known as the "Divine Madman". Couples who have difficulty conceiving often visit the monastery to seek blessings from the divine power associated with Drukpa Kunley. The monastery is adorned with phallus paintings and sculptures, which are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Phallus symbolism is common in Bhutanese culture and is considered a representation of fertility and protection.

There are several local restaurants and cafes along the route where you can stop for lunch in one of the local restaurant or a farmhouse. After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong (Fortress) built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal has played a prominent role in the civil and religious life of the Kingdom. It is ancient capital of Bhutan and one of the most majestic dzongs in the country. Admire its stunning architecture, intricate woodwork, and beautiful location at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers. Drive to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery which is perched on a ridge amid pine trees and overlooking valleys of Punakha and Wangduephodrang, gleams the magnificent structures of Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang(Temple). Interact with the nuns and they love to speak English with visitors and learn about the ways of the world.

4Day 04: Punakha - Phobjikha

Traveling from Punakha to Phobjikha Valley is not just a journey but an opportunity to experience Bhutan’s diverse landscapes and natural beauty. Enjoy the scenic drive and explore the cultural and natural attractions along the way to make the most of your trip.

Depart from Punakha in the morning, ideally after breakfast. Enjoy the scenic drive through Wangdue Phodrang District, known for its dzong and terraced fields. Wangdue Phodrang Dzong was founded in 1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan. It served as a vital administrative and strategic center in the region. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the route. Continue the journey towards Phobjikha Valley, enjoying views of the surrounding mountains and forests.

Arrive in Phobjikha Valley in the late afternoon or early evening, allowing time to settle in and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Visit Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Gonpa). This 17th-century monastery is one of the main attractions in Phobjikha Valley and holds significant religious importance. Visitors can attend prayers and interact with monks to gain insights into Bhutanese Buddhism and monastic life. Towards evening, visit Black-Necked Crane Center located near Gangtey Monastery, this center provides information about the endangered black-necked cranes that migrate to Phobjikha Valley every winter. We can also learn about the cranes’ behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts through interactive exhibits and displays.

5Day 05: Phobjikha - Trongsa

Traveling from Phobjikha Valley to Trongsa allows you to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of central Bhutan. Enjoy the journey through Bhutan’s picturesque landscapes and historic landmarks along the way.

Depart from Phobjikha Valley in the morning after breakfast. Enjoy the scenic drive through the mountains and valleys of central Bhutan. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the route. Continue your journey towards Trongsa, passing through Pele La Pass (3,300 meters/10,827 feet), where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges.

Arrive in Trongsa in the late afternoon or early evening, allowing time to check in to your accommodation and relax. Visit to Trongsa Dzong, one of the largest and most strategically located dzongs in Bhutan. Explore the complex architecture, courtyards, temples, and the Ta Dzong (watchtower) which houses a museum showcasing Bhutanese history and artifacts. Exploring the museum within the Ta Dzong. Learn about Bhutan’s monarchy, history, and cultural heritage through exhibits including royal memorabilia, traditional costumes, and religious artifacts.

6Day 06: Trongsa - Bumthang

Traveling from Trongsa to Bumthang allows you to experience more of Bhutan’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. Enjoy the journey through Bhutan’s picturesque landscapes and historic landmarks along the way.

Depart from Trongsa in the morning after breakfast. Enjoy the scenic drive through the mountains and valleys of central Bhutan. Stop at Chendebji Chorten, a large stupa built in Nepalese style. A picturesque stupa located along the route between Trongsa and Bumthang, offering a serene spot for a break and photography. After arriving Bumthang, visit Jakar Dzong. The impressive fortress, also known as the "Castle of the White Bird," overlooks the Chamkhar Valley. You could also visit the Cheese factory to see how local Gouda cheese is made. Take some rest here at this cozy outlet and snack on Bumthang Cheese and locally made white beer - the Red Panda beer. Bumthang is known for their unique local cuisines and we’ll take you to one of our favourite restaurants to spend the evening with good food, locally brewed beer and some conversation.

7Day 07: Bumthang Sightseeing

Exploring Bumthang offers a rich cultural experience with its ancient temples, monasteries, scenic valleys, and traditional villages.

After breakfast, visit Kurjey Lhakhang as it holds a great historical and spiritual importance in Bhutan. It is associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who visited Bhutan in the 8th century and subdued local demons and spirits. Kurjey Lhakhang hosts an annual Tsechu (festival) in honor of Guru Rinpoche, where masked dances and religious ceremonies are performed. Then visit Jambay Lhakhang founded in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet, Jambay Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. The Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival is celebrated here annually in late October or early November. The highlight of the festival is the Mewang (fire ceremony), where locals walk through a large fire to cleanse themselves of sins and misfortunes.

After lunch, visit Tamshing Lhakhang founded by the renowned treasure revealer (terton) Pema Lingpa in 1501. The Tamshing Phala Chhoepa festival is held here annually in autumn, featuring mask dances performed by monks and laymen. After that make a visit to Mebar Tsho, or the Burning Lake, is a sacred site associated with the treasure revealer Pema Lingpa. According to legend, Pema Lingpa jumped into the lake with a burning butter lamp and emerged with the lamp still burning and with treasures he had discovered underwater. It is a place of pilgrimage for Bhutanese Buddhists, who visit to pay homage and make offerings. Mebar Tsho is set amidst serene natural surroundings, surrounded by pine forests and cliffs, adding to its mystical ambiance.

8Day 08: Bumthang - Paro
Traveling from Bumthang to Paro involves a journey through scenic landscapes and requires careful planning to make the most of your trip.
Depart from Bumthang in the early morning. Enjoy the scenic drive through the Bumthang Valley, passing by traditional villages and farmlands.
 
After lunch Wangdue Phodrang, drive towards Paro, passing through beautiful countryside and traditional villages. Enroute Dochula Pass again, enjoying the panoramic views of the Himalayas and the 108 stupas. It’s a great spot for photography and to stretch your legs. On arrival you will be taken to your hotel for a check-in and rest for a while. Then visit Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong). A fortress-monastery overlooking the Paro Valley. Admire its stunning architecture, intricate woodwork, and beautiful paintings. Make a visit National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong). After visiting the dzong, head to the Ta Dzong, located above the Paro Dzong. It houses a fascinating collection of Bhutanese art, relics, religious thangkas (scroll paintings), and historical artifacts.

9Day 09: Paro - Tiger's Nest Hike

After breakfast, hike to Taktshang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is a legendary and iconic site in Bhutan, renowned for its spiritual significance and breathtaking location. One of Bhutan’s holiest shrines and an amazing structure that crosses all boundaries of architectural masterpiece. Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) is perched some 1000m/3000ft on a cliff overlooking a valley. It is said that the legendary Indian saint Guru Padma Sambhava, flew from Tibet on the back of a tigress to tame five demons, who were opposing the spread of Buddhism in Bhutan in 746 AD. Taktshang Monastery is the ultimate pilgrim site for all Buddhist especially in Bhutan.

The hike to the monastery takes about 5hours (up and down), and follows an ancient path marked by river powered prayer wheels.

Lunch at cafeteria and towards evening,  visit Kyichu Lhakhang built in the 7th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo, Kyichu Lhakhang is considered one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. It is said to be one of the 108 temples built by him to subdue a demoness that was causing obstacles in the spread of Buddhism in the region. Kyichu Lhakhang in Paro and Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang are said to be two temples of the 108 temples built by Songsen Goempo over the Himalayan area. Drive back to Paro town and allows yourself to experience the cultural richness and scenic beauty of this Bhutanese town.

10Day 10: Farewell

After breakfast, our representatives will bid you farewell to your onward destination.
